Fan Man
Dubbo Lighting Centre's resident fan guy. And yes, we sell fans.
Fan Man is Matt McKay, owner of Dubbo Lighting Centre on Wingewarra Street. He started Fan Man for one reason: to make sure everyone in Dubbo knows where to buy a ceiling fan.
"Do you sell fans?"
The question Dubbo Lighting Centre heard so often that it got its own character.
Why Dubbo has a Fan Man
Dubbo Lighting Centre has been selling lighting and ceiling fans on Wingewarra Street for more than 50 years. Even so, customers kept walking in and asking whether the store also sold fans.
So Matt, a qualified electrician who took over the store with his wife Emma in 2023, stopped doing polished product videos and did something Dubbo would remember instead. He became Fan Man.
What started with a personalised number plate grew into a wrapped car, a run of local comedy videos and a character kids now shout at from the school fence.
Fan Man, the short version
Who
Fan Man (sometimes written Fanman) is Matt McKay, owner of Dubbo Lighting Centre and a qualified electrician. Out of the suit, he and Emma run the showroom, design lighting plans and look after fan installs across the region.
What
A local, homegrown character who exists to answer one question: where can I buy a ceiling fan in Dubbo? These days Matt mostly dresses up for fun, because the laughs are half the point.
Where
Fan Man's home base is Dubbo Lighting Centre at 32 Wingewarra Street, Dubbo NSW. You'll also spot him around town in the Fan Man car, and every week on the Dubbo Lighting Centre Instagram and Facebook pages.
How
With short, funny videos made for Dubbo people: CCTV skits, song parodies, mock citizen's arrests and interviews with local identities. There's always a ceiling fan somewhere in the shot.
Fan Man's greatest hits
March 2026
The Dubbo Lighting Centre song
A Fan Man take on a classic rock anthem, packed with Dubbo in-jokes and a night in the Old Dubbo Gaol. It passed 300,000 views in five days, the store's biggest video yet.
2026
Interviewing the lunch thief
Months after the lunch went missing, Fan Man sat down with the man who took it. Turns out he used to work at the store, and he really likes his tucker.
September 2025
The stolen lunch
CCTV shows a shoeless man wander into the store and pinch Matt's lunch, with a ceiling fan conveniently in frame. It spread through Dubbo's local Facebook groups and ended up on national breakfast TV.
Ongoing
Citizen's arrests and local interviews
Mock arrests, chats with town icons and plenty of fan puns. New videos land regularly on Instagram and Facebook.
